Clinton MA Town and School Info
Clinton, Massachusetts
Clinton was incorporated in 1850 and became a center for textile manufacturing. Mill workers from New Hampshire and Vermont as well as immigrant labor from Ireland, Germany, Scotland and England came to operate the power looms invented by Clinton’s tycoons, Horatio and Erastus Bigelow. Foundries and machine shops arrived and soon there were factories producing shoes, boots and clothing. By 1885, Clinton was the biggest manufacturer of carpets in the world.
Around the beginning of the 20th century, the Wachusett Dam and Reservoir was built in Clinton by thousands of immigrants, to serve as part of Boston’s water supply. Road and train lines had to relocate, and homes, schools, factories and churches were either moved or torn down. According to Clinton’s history, some 4000 residents in a Catholic cemetery had to be transported to a new resting place. This project is considered the largest “hand dug” dam in the world today.
Today, Clinton is home to over 13,000 residents. A top tourist attraction in town is the Museum of Russian Icons, which is attracting art lovers from around the world.
