First settled in 1650, Carlisle was once part of neighboring Acton, Concord, Chelmsford and Billerica. It separated as a unique entity and was incorporated in 1805.
 
Today Carlisle has about 5000 residents, all dedicated to maintaining its rural character. There are no traffic lights, no shopping centers and no traffic congestion. The town mascot is a mosquito, with the local paper named for it. Until 2009, Carlisle was dry,until multiple successive votes allowed Fern's, the local general store, to sell spirits. 
 
Carlisle has a state park for cross country skiing, a famous summer ice cream stand, and hundreds of acres of conservation land.   Its fine school system shares a regional high school with Concord.
 
Carlisle homes tend to be situated on large plots of land, with privacy a top priority.
